Musicians and performing arts
Set-ups and seating designed to support longer, more comfortable practice. Results vary; if playing hurts, speak to a physiotherapist.
IllustrativeThe problem
What we see in musicians and performing arts
- Neck, shoulder and jaw strain from sustained instrument positions
- Hand, wrist and forearm overuse before performances and exams
- Low back pain from long rehearsals on poor seating
- No warm-up or pacing routine for intensive practice
- Treatment only after pain stops playing
The legal angle
Ergonomics Regulations, 2019 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 for employed musicians, educators and crew; performance-related musculoskeletal pain is otherwise a self-funded or medical-aid matter.

Questions we get asked
Do I need to bring my instrument?+
Yes. We assess you playing, in your usual position, for about 45 minutes.
Can you assess online?+
Yes. A video assessment works well for most instruments; we send a written plan afterwards.
Is this for students too?+
Yes. We run workshops for music schools and university departments, and individual sessions for students.
Will my medical aid pay?+
Physiotherapy treatment may be claimable depending on your plan; assessments and products are usually self-funded. Check with your scheme.
